Team Concept

The Lunar Spectator is an advanced tank-like vehicle that is specifically engineered to take civilians to explore the lunar surface. Only the best materials and systems have been assembled to construct this piece of advanced mechanics. The Lunar Spectator will be the first hydrogen internal combustion engine that can operate in space making it a pioneer of space and mechanics.

Team Description

The mission of the Los Altos Academy of Engineering is to establish effective opportunities in mathematics, science, computer science, and engineering for students who demonstrate an early interest in these career fields. The Los Altos Engineering Academy has a tradition of integrating math and science curriculum with student directed engineering projects. Students apply academic knowledge to solve real-world problems. From solar and electric powered cars to human powered airplanes, students learn to use teamwork to design and construct large scale projects. Associations with Edison, Toyota, AQMD, and Boeing give students access to leading-edge technology and expertise. Cooperation with Cal Poly Pomona, Cal State LA, Cerritos College has provided academy students with access to some of the leading hydrogen technology in America.

Great to see that things are progressing. I like the new logo your team has designed. It may be interesting for your team to look into the types of materials that are used in aerospace systems. The materials we can use on the Earth do not always work well in the vacuum of space. Have you considered the material for your vehicle itself?

In order to ensure the safety of our passengers from a hydrogen related death, we will rely on standard safety procedures as well as educate passagers on the common properties of hydrogen. One of the biggest misconceptions about hydrogen is how dangerous handling hydrogen is. Gasoline stays on the ground when it leaks from a tank. As a result, a gasoline fire remains on the ground while it spreads. Hydrogen, on the other hand, quickly disperses into the atmosphere. In addition, it has the ability to travel through most conventional surfaces. Leaking hydrogen could escape through a wood, plastic, and even a brick wall at 30 miles per hour! As a result, a hydrogen fire disperses in the air instead of remaining grounded. We understand this and so have devised plans around it. Thank you for your comments, they are greatly appreciated.

Hydrogen is a preferred fuel for two reasons. First, hydrogen is by far the most abundant element in the universe. Compared a fossil fuel vehicle, a hydrogen powered vehicle's fuel is easily obtained and nearly unlimited. Second, a hydrogen fuel produces no harmful byproducts. The only byproduct produced by the hydrogen engine is water. The hydrogen internal combustion engine utilized a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen to fuel its power. Both oxygen and hydrogen are easily obtained and stored on earth. Oxygen and hydrogen tanks can be easily transported to the moon. Although a solar-powered vehicle is also possible, power production would be an issue. When the sun is not visible, solar panels do not produce the power needed to run the vehicle. In comparison, a vehicle that carries its fuel will experience less variability.

Could you at least elaborate on what "only the best materials" are? As far as I'm concerned, diamonds are a pretty good material and I don't think a diamond combustion engine tank is the best way to go in terms of lunar exploration. Wait a second, a combustion engine??? Maybe I'm missing something, but when I went to school, the moon had no atmosphere and no shell of air around it. How on Earth (or on Moon, in this case) are you going to get a combustion engine to work without air?
