On an earlier reply, you claim "With an economy of scale, the costs of construction would be recouped within a few short years". Comparing the amount of energy the average cell can produce with the cost of solar cells and polycarbonate (which is a plastic, not a glass) having your highway pay itself off in 14 years seems more accurate. And polycarbonate is somewhat vulnerable to the fluids found in a car, and melts at 250 degrees C, so your road would not tolerate crashes.
Reply: Well, "short" is a relative term. Our main objective for this project is to eliminate the United State’s carbon emissions. Making it financially appealing is a secondary goal, but as with evolution of products advances in solar cells would increase at a rapid rate because of the placed importance on them. Our goal is creating a system in which we are self sustaining, not reliant on fossil fuels.
The polycarbonate glass that we plan on using will be a mixture of reinforced polycarbonate "and" glass. The material would have a higher impact strength than standard asphalt. The panels would be towards the median, so vehicles would not normally be driving directly over them. And if there were a bad enough crash that the temperatures on the road exceeded 250 degrees C, even normal roads would need to be repaved or restructured.

Reply: Yes, the interchangeable battery would be for cars, but they would also be developed for all motor vehicles as well. By creating a common battery system, (similar to concepts that manufactures have recently have proposed) batteries could easily be swapped out at a service stations in a matter of minutes if needed. Realistically, not every gas station would have this capability, but as long as you have them within you range a person could confidently drive without fear of running out of fuel. Is your project more then just solar highways. Iv'e seen this idea before and even though it seems you are making upgrades to it, it is still a basic idea.
Reply: Our proposal is more than just solar roads, it is basically a comprehensive energy plan base on renewable energy.

Now if solar panels are made from silicon, and cars weigh lets say 2 tons. Wouldn’t the weight of the car break the solar panels imbedded within the rode? If however, this design were to be installed it would cost a huge amount of money. Being that the majority of people aren’t installing even a single solar panel because of cost, why would people spend a lot of tax money instituting a solar road? In a recent NOVA documentary governor Arnold Schwarzenegger stated, people aren’t willing to pay money to stick solar panels on their houses; not because they don’t want to, they cant because the beginning cost of solar panels would be too large for the regular family to pay.
Reply: #1:The solar panels will be protected by a very strong layer of polycarbonate glass that is a few inches thick. The material that we envision using has a much higher impact strength than regular asphalt.
#2: Granted, the costs of constructing this array would be massive, but the power generated by a national sized grid would be just as large. With an economy of scale, the costs of construction would be recouped within a few short years. Besides, someone has to start.
#3: The scale of our project isn’t really comparable to the cost of a household solar array. Its construction would jumpstart the solar panel industry anyway, giving further incentive for innovation and cost reductions thereby reducing the overall price per panel. Also, much of the money for the project will be taken from funds that would’ve been spent maintaining the roads in the future.

#3: New power plants would have to be constructed, taking up more of our valuable farm and woodland areas. The solar roads on the other hand would already be near existing infrastructure. They would be easily accessible and would not take up anymore land area.
