The (Re)Cycler
The (Re)Cycler is a stationary bike that generates electricity; this electricity is then harnessed and used to heat the showers in a gym or to power the personal electronics (cellphone, iPod, etc.) of the rider. By partnering with Universities from acros
Team Concept
The concept for our project is an environmentally conscious fitness system. The fitness system will harness human energy to be used toward the energy needs of its associated fitness center. The energy will be collected during cardiovascular workouts, specifically biking. Old bikes will be reclaimed, recycled, and refurbished, for use in electricity generation. The rear wheel of each bike will be connected to a fan belt that will drive a permanent magnet motor that will serve as an electricity generator, converting the rider�s kinetic energy to electrical energy used to charge lithium-ion batteries.
In the recent past there have been many attempts to devise pathways to harness human energy for use in electronic devices. Concurrently, membership at community fitness centers has become a staple of modern American life . Others have begun to weave these two ideas together collecting energy generated from stationary bikes at health centers . The most significant innovations of this project come in the form of recycling once road worthy bikes, now discarded, into power generating bikes and the incorporation of large scale community centers (such as universities and local youth organizations) into the power generation and education mission of the fitness system. A recurring theme in the literature on bicycle power generation is the small scale of its power supply. By incorporating greater numbers of community members� into the generation of electrical power, more power can be produced and used on a larger scale.
The most important innovation of our (Re)Cycler system lies not merely in its ability to generate clean energy, but most powerfully in the ability of the system to unite communities around the common goal of the (Re)Cycler while still allowing for the freedom of choice that Americans value so much. The (Re)Cycler will allow riders to charge their own personal battery and choose whether to charge their electronics on the spot, contribute the gym or take their battery home for personal use.

This group of young men banded together to meet the challenge of producing clean, community building energy. Human produced DC electricity seemed to be a fitting answer. We are a group of three juniors at The Haverford School in Haverford, PA. We combined our love of sports and our interest in science to create this product.

To the person below, first off you state that "you would have to make everyone on the planet jump on one of your bikes to provide enough power"- provide enough power to do what? We are not trying to power a city here. If you read the description, you'd notice that we are merely trying to power personal electronics (cellphones, iPods, laptops, etc.). We are not trying to generate enough electricity to run the world by biking; rather, the (Re)Cycler is a symbol of how easy it is to be green. We hope to use it as an educational tool to make people more conscious of their environmental impact.

Thanks everyone for the kinds words. Mr. Rubenstein- we are currently working on a prototype and after that we will be able to give you specs and a rough cost. We are also toying with the idea of making a (Re)Cycler using a fold able bike, so that you could fold it up after use and put it away. This would be ideal for people living in apartments, dorms, or anywhere else with limited space. We will get back to you as soon as possible with more information. Mr. Burgundy- We are sorry that you feel offended but your last post was not a question, you merely criticized our team and our concept. Joshua- Thanks for the encouragement. As of now, we do not currently have a prototype built, though we plan to have one built by the innovation summit. In the past week we have spoken to several local Universities and bike shops about possible sponsorships and have heard positive things, especially from Haverford College, who may be donating a bike. Hopefully we will receive a bike or two and a few monetary donations and then we will be able to build a prototype. We will keep everyone posted through the blog. Thanks!
